Bonding Acetal Plastics with Industrial Adhesives

Bonding Acetal Plastics (Delrin®* and Celcon®**)

Acetal plastics are noted for their stiffness and high strength properties. They are resistant to wear/abrasion, impact, fatigue and gasoline/solvents. Additionally, they offer dimensional stability, low moisture absorption, electrical insulation and machinability.

Epoxy Adhesives for Bonding Acetal Plastics

Acetal plastics are widely used in the appliance, transportation, electronic, electrical and medical industries. Specific applications include:

  • Automotive switches
  • Conveyors
  • Metered-dose inhalers
  • Pumps
  • Farm machinery
  • Relay components
  • Fuel filters

Master Bond formulates epoxy adhesives for bonding Delrin® (acetal plastics) to Delrin® and Delrin® to dissimilar substrates.

Consideration for Adhesive Bonding of Acetal Plastics - Chemical Resistance

Prominent adhesive systems used for bonding acetal plastics are EP42HT-2, EP30M4LV and EP30-2. Prior to bonding, chemical etching to acetal surfaces is necessary to optimize bond strength capability. Master Bond EP42HT-2 offers serviceability up to 450°F and resistance to steam, acids, alkalis and many solvents. Two component, room temperature curing EP30M4LV is noted for its ability to withstand exposure to skydrol, 70% sulfuric acid, 98% sulfuric acid, 50% sodium hydroxide and bleach. This low viscosity compound has excellent flow properties and superior electrical insulation properties. NASA low outgassing approved EP30-2 exhibits superior optical clarity. Cryogenically serviceable down to 4K, EP30-2 resists a wide array of chemicals and has excellent bond strength.
