Product Description

Master Bond EP21BAS is a radiopaque epoxy compound which offers outstanding performance and superior processability. Radiopaque epoxy polymer compounds are employed for medical diagnostic and therapeutic devices to achieve optical visibility when exposed to x-rays, fluoroscopes or x-ray imaging procedures. The degree of radiopacity achieved depends on the type and amount of the filler employed, the energy capacity of the x-ray machine and the requirements of the specific medical procedure to be used.

EP21BAS has been formulated to be effective for even 100KV, px-ray (peak x-ray) machines and higher energy capacities. EP21BAS contains more than 50% by weight of high purity ceramic radiopaque non-toxic filler. The amount of X-ray exposure employed depends on the specifics of the application. Soft tissues generally require less exposure than bones, skulls and other harder tissues. EP21BAS has been found eminently satisfactory for most typical diagnostic screening and many therapeutic procedures.

EP21BAS epoxy compound cures readily at ambient temperatures and more quickly at elevated temperatures with a convenient one-to-one mix ratio, by weight or volume. Additionally, the EP21BAS compound has unusually high desirable characteristics of being able to adjust the properties of the cured system by changing the mix ratio. Adding more part “A” (e.g. 2:1 mix ratio) gives a more rigid cure while adding more part “B” (e.g. 2:3 mix ratio) gives a more forgiving cure. EP21BAS produces high strength, durable bonds, seals, coatings and castings which hold up well to thermal cycling and resist many chemicals including water, oils, fuels, acids, bases and salts. It is serviceable over the wide temperature range of -60°F to +250°F. It adheres well to a variety of substrates including metals, glass, ceramics, wood, rubber, and many types of plastics. Once cured, EP21BAS is an excellent electrical insulator. The standard color of the cured material is off-white.

Product Advantages

  • Outstanding radiopacity (typically at 100KV px-ray energy, 8-10% transmission, 4-5 mm)
  • Non-critical 1:1 mix ratio by weight or volume
  • Very forgiving mix ratio feature allows adjusting cured properties. Adding more “A” part (e.g. 2:1) gives a more rigid cure (enhanced machinability) while adding more “B” part (e.g. 2:3) gives a more forgiving cure (greater impact resistance)
  • Ambient temperature or elevated temperature cures
  • Superior durability, thermal shock and chemical resistance
